The most beautiful islands to go on holiday in Greece

One of the most popular destinations for summer holidays is undoubtedly Greece. Thanks to its numerous islands and islets, the country offers wonderful and unspoiled places. Immersed in an ancient culture, where traces of the ancient past are still present, the islands of Greece offer unforgettable Mediterranean landscapes, with typical villages, crystal clear sea and archaeological remains. In addition, the excellent cuisine makes Greece a place not to be missed.

Santorini

This list certainly included the symbolic island of Greece, Santorini. It is one of the most beautiful ever, not only in Greece, but in the whole Mediterranean. Its characteristic features are the white and blue houses, set on the rocks of the volcanic island and overlooking the deep blue sea. Classic postcard. The island of the Cyclades archipelago, located in the heart of the Eego Sea, is a place not to be missed. The island also has a special red beach called Red Beach.

Crete

Among the most beautiful islands of Greece, one cannot fail to mention Crete, the largest Greek island and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean. Situated between the Aegean and Libyan Seas, Crete is surrounded by many smaller islands and islets, including Gozzo, the southernmost island of Greece, and physical Europe. Crete is famous for its beautiful beaches, two of which, such as Elafonissi and Balos, are considered to be among the most beautiful in the world.
It houses important museums and archaeological sites of the ancient Greek civilization, such as Knossos and Phaistos, through which there is an important pilgrimage route. Not only that, inland, its mountains and gorges offer spectacular trekking routes, such as the one that crosses the Samariá Gorges, in the homonymous national park, the longest canyon in Europe after the Verdon Gorges in France.

Syros

The island of Syros, or Siro, is located in the Cyclades archipelago, near Mykonos. Less frequented by mass tourism, but no wonder you can’t miss it. White and colored houses, rocks, deep blue sea with uncrowded beaches make Syros an enchanting place. The island has a rich history and the capital Ermopoli still retains traces of the ancient Venetian domination.
There are several Catholic and Orthodox churches on the island, the main one being the Church of St. Nicholas, which stands out above the center of Ermopoli with its characteristic blue dome.
