Harihar fort or Harshagad is one of the forts situated in Nashik, Maharashtra. It is a significant fort in the Nashik district. It was constructed to view the trade route that runs through Gonda Ghat. It draws a lot of visitors due to its unique cut-rock steps. Harihar fort was built in it’s Yadava timeframe. The fort was surrendered to Shahaji Bhosale Khan Zamam in 1636 along with Trymbak and the other Poona forts. The fort was seized by Captain. Briggs in 1818, along with 17 other forts.
There are two village bases of the fort: Harshewadi as well as Nirgudpada. The Harshewadi is located 13 kilometers away from Trymbakeshwar. The hike from Harshewadi is much easier than from Nirgudpada.A broad, safe hiking route starts at the top of the hillock that lies north that is part of Nirgudpada. It goes through scrub forest until it is able to reach an open ridge that is joined to the fort. It takes approximately an hour to get to the scarp on the hill upon the top of which Fort is situated.
The climb up the 60-meter step cut in rock is amazing. It’s an apron-like stone ladder set at a 60-degree angle along the scarp. The steps are worn in many spots, but the holes that are on each side of the steps are easily cut to hold onto. After getting to an entrance point, path is a left-hand traverse, and then a helical rock cut step is to be taken, which are steeper than those previous ones. The steps eventually finish with narrow entrance. At several places, the steps are narrow enough and only one person is able to climb them at one time. Accommodation is possible at the fort and in the villages nearby.
