3 Great Ways to Prevent Bug Bites Whilst Travelling
Travelling can be a great experience as you get out and see the world for yourself. However, before you set out on your travels, there are a number of things you should do to prepare yourself for any eventuality. From making sure you have health insurance to packing your foreign phrases guidebook, there are lots of things to think about before you begin your travels. One thing that you may not yet have thought about is the possibility of bug bites. In some countries, insect bites are simply irritating and sometimes a little painful. However, in other countries, these pests can be dangerous as they can spread disease.
This means that preventing bug bites while you’re travelling is important, but what can you do to protect yourself?
#1 – Pack a Good Insect Repellent
Insect repellent is an important and useful tool when you are trying to prevent bug bites. However, it can be a challenge to find one that is truly effective. The chemical DEET is often used in insect repellents, but this is a harsh chemical which can have some nasty side effects.
Try a DEET-free bug repellent such as the anti bug bite moisturisers and natural insect repellents from Alfresco. These products are all natural, so you can be confident when using it on your skin that you’ll be able to keep bugs away without covering yourself in harsh chemicals.
#2 – Stay Away From Bugs
It may sound easier said than done, but it’s advisable to do what you can to stay away from bugs. This would mean being careful when you are in an area where there is a body of standing water, such as a lake or a pond as you are more likely to find bugs around these areas.
You should also be particularly careful between dusk and dawn when insects are more active. If you are sitting outside in an evening, this is a prime time for bug bites, as well as early mornings.
#3 – Keep Bugs Away From You
Just as you are trying to stay away from the bugs, you should also try to keep them away from you. While covering up when you’re travelling in a hot country may not be the first thing you want to do, it could protect you from biting insects. This is especially a good idea during evenings or if you are walking through grassy areas.
Another way to keep bugs away from you is to avoid using strongly fragranced shower gels, perfumes or moisturisers as these can attract bugs to you. Instead, use products that have no fragrance, or at least have lighter fragrances so you can keep the insects at bay.
Insect bites can be incredibly irritating, so when you are travelling, the last thing you want to be worrying about is itchy and painful bites. Make sure to prepare for your trip and think about how you will prevent bug bites. If you are travelling to certain parts of the world, you may need to be immunised against some diseases that can be spread by bug bites, so make sure to speak to your doctor before travelling.
