Dubrovnik

Although it was relentlessly shelled during Croatia’s Homeland War in the 1990s, its mighty walls, sturdy towers, medieval monasteries, Baroque churches, graceful squares and fascinating residential neighborhoods are once again shining with renewed splendor.
For an unparalleled view of this pearl of the Adriatic, take the cable car up Srđ, the city’s craggy backdrop. For a more intimate look, circle the city walls and peek into hidden gardens and old lanes with clotheslines.
Plitvice Lakes National Park
Plitvice Lakes National Park is a turquoise ribbon of lakes connected by rushing waterfalls in the forested heart of mainland Croatia. There are dozens of lakes – from the 2.5-mile-long Kozjak to reed-fringed ponds – and their stunning colors are a product of the underlying rock.
The lakes are separated by moss-covered travertine surfaces, and boardwalks allow you to easily traverse this magnificent water world. To avoid the crowds at the waterfront, follow the trails through the beech, spruce, fir and pine forests.
Hvar Town
In midsummer, there is no better place than the town of Hvar to dress up and get dressed up. Tanned beauties descend from their yachts in droves, mingling with die-hard backpackers at après beach parties as the sun disappears behind the horizon.
While the cash-rich yacht guys keep the town’s top-notch restaurants and cocktail bars running, the sun-drenched young revelers do the same for the small dance bars that are the mainstay of Hvar’s scene. Pack beachwear and shoes suitable for dancing on tables, and you are good to go.
Mljet
Enveloped by dense pine forests, the wonderful Mljet is an island idyll. Legend has it that Odysseus was stranded here for seven years, and it’s easy to understand why he took his time leaving.
The entire western part of Mljet is a national park, where you’ll find two gorgeous cobalt-colored lakes, an island monastery, and the sleepy little port of Pomena, which is as pretty as a bouquet of flowers. Don’t neglect the eastern part of Mljet, where you’ll find some quiet little coves, lovely beaches and some excellent restaurants.
