Each American state has its own particular charm and personality, but that of Florida, the so-called “Sunshine State”, is truly unique. In fact, although it is totally different from all the other US states, Florida is one of the regions with the greatest tourist attraction in the United States and, at the same time, one of the least known. This double soul of the State of the Sun is certainly one of its most intriguing aspects, capable of attracting both less demanding visitors and those looking for more isolated and less “touristy” attractions in one fell swoop.
When to go to Florida?
First of all, a brief introduction to the Florida climate, to understand when it is best to plan a trip to Florida. The state, as its nickname clearly suggests, is famous for its warm temperatures and bright sunshine, however it is also known to be very rainy and easily subject to thunderstorms and hurricanes, which hit the territory especially during the hot summer season. Although Florida can be visited in any season of the year, the best and most suitable time for a holiday is the one that more or less corresponds to the winter season, which roughly coincides with the months from November to April. Not surprisingly, the sunny climate with swimsuits and sunglasses that can be found in this period makes Florida one of the most popular destinations for the Christmas and New Year holidays, as well as for the first months of the year. There will be a reason why the coastal cities and beaches of Florida are stormed not only by the many young people, but also by the retirees of the Northern (and European) states who come to “winter” here!
What to see
Miami
Miami is the undisputed destination of Florida! This city has something for everyone. Do not miss the Bayside Marketplace, the Jungle Island Zoo, the Coral Castle architectural structure, the imposing Freedom Tower and the populated Miami Beach area with its Venetian Islands and the Holocaust Memorial. In Miami you will also have no problem getting around thanks to the well-equipped urban transport and the countless taxis you will encounter.
Tampa
Tampa is another great city. It overlooks the Gulf of Florida and a huge bay. Here too there are many things to do and see, for example you cannot miss a visit to the historic Ybor City district, a day at the African theme park Busch Gardens, a bit of relaxation on the beaches of St. Petersburg, Sarasota and Clearwater, and a day dedicated to the many and varied museums present.
Orlando
Believe it or not the main tourist destination in Florida is not Miami but Orlando… are you wondering why? Thousands of square kilometers of amusement parks are enough for you? But Orlando is not just Disney World, Universal Studios or SeaWorld …
The hotels
Across the bay from Tampa are St Petersburg and nearby Clearwater, two of the most popular destinations for North Americans who come here to escape the cold winters and enjoy the ocean beaches and mild climate. St Petersburg has grown to become the fourth largest city in the state of Florida and is commonly referred to as “St Pete” by the locals. It offers over 50km of beaches and some of these are now mentioned in every Florida guide. On the other hand, here we boast of having 360 days of sunshine a year which explains the nickname of “The Sunshine City”. But not only seniors looking for a place to winter: here there are several communities that are worth a visit such as the Greek one in Tarpon Springs or the Scottish one in Dunedin. Florida is full of fantastic hotels where you are sure to have one of the best vacations.
