Florence through Scott’s Lens

Hi, I’m an American photographer living in Florence, Italy where I have lived for the better part of a decade. I have worked extensively in Europe as a travel photographer and sell my photos as matted and professionally framed artistic prints. Today I want to share a bit about what I do, and to get you to know a little about the city where I currently live- Florence, Italy.

About Me

I’ve been a professional photographer for just over 15 years, and I have worked for a variety of companies both as a staff photographer and a freelancer. I really love what I do, and I am also an advocate of slow travel and sustainability. 15% of the sales made through my online store are donated to charity.

About the city where I live

Florence, as we know, is undoubtedly a spectacular city of art that can be visited at any time of the year, alone or as a couple, with children or friends: whatever your trip, the things to see in Florence are almost limitless.

Known as the “cradle of the Renaissance”, Florence is a real open-air museum. The most important monuments and buildings can be reached by bicycle or with a pleasant walk, and you can experience a weekend or a holiday dedicated to culture … and beauty. Florence is a perfect city to photograph with its monuments and suggestive landscapes; living in this city you certainly always find the unique opportunity to always take a new photo of a view you’d never seen before.

What I do

I would say my specialty as a photographer is capturing the essence of the places that I visit. I then sell framed prints that I’ve creatively designed, which all vary in subject. Prominently they are of cities, cityscapes, and architecture from all the trips I have taken.

At the time of writing this post I currently offer shots from Italy, but I post new pieces frequently, so I recommend subscribing to my newsletter for updates coming in the future from the nearly 30 other countries I have visited. Photography is a real passion of mine, and I hope that through my photographs I am able to convey the same emotions that I felt when I took the image- helping to also transport you to that very moment in time.

What I like about photography

Photography is my soul created into art. The message behind my images can be clear or mysterious, but they’re always there. Take a photo of a landscape, for example. It can be said that photography is an end in itself, limited to showing the beauty of the landscape. However, it’s not that simple. A landscape photo is exactly where the photographer looked at the scene and let the light write something on his sensor. It’s the air that he held in his lungs. It’s perfect moment of stillness in the air. This photo is in the past, but at the same time the feelings that it inspires you to feel are in the present; a future of what this place represents, and potentially will no longer be.

I recently read an interesting book by photographer Ferdinand Scian on photography and identity. His words made me think that photography is not something static, that is, once captured, it remains the same.

Photographs change and can be a wonderful paradox in which the stark scientific truth of the moment meets the dynamism of change. If I took a photo of a beautiful landscape again and found that the concrete giants are in place today, the image would change because it would no longer be the photographer’s message about the beauty that is, but the beauty that was. The way of living with this photograph and reading this message would change. In one case it would be the memory of something that is and of what is not visible, in another it would be a memory, perhaps painful, of what no longer exists.
