Casa de Campo is located in the tropical seaside town of Ponderosa in La Romana, on the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic. It was created in 1975 by Gulf & Western and covers 7,000 acres.
The first to enjoy the luxuries of this enclave were friends of Charles Bluhdorn, founder of Gulf + Western, who built the retreat. After the death of Bluhdorn, the Cuban-American Fanjul family bought the house and opened it for paying guests. The architects Pete and Alice Dye had had a home at Casa de Campo since the early 1970s.
The golfers of the world flocked to the field after setting the backdrop for the 1971 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit number. Course on the Caribbean constantly in the best 100 courses in the world. The Links Course which opened in 1974 and The Roman Country Club, opened only in 1990.
The brand new Dye course, the much-acclaimed Dye Fore, flanks the cliffs 300 feet above the Chavón River, overlooking the village of Altos de Chavón, in the distant mountains and on the new marina.
Dye recently completed another course on the plateau called Dye Fore Lakes. Casa de Campo has over 1,700 private villas, starting at a minimum of US $ 500,000 to a maximum of US $ 24,000,000. Completed in 2000, Casa de Campo has a modern harbor for tourists, with 400 berths, complete with a 120-ton TraveLift designed by the Italian architect, Gian Franco Fini to resemble Portofino. Around this port there are over 70 restaurants, shops, bars and houses. In 2010, the Casa de Campo Marina hosted the Rolex Farr 40 World Cup.
